  14.     In the process, she poses some
  15. very interesting questions for the
  16. three great religions that were born
  17. in the Middle East. During this season
  18. when we celebrate the Renewal of one
  19. of those faiths, the Birth of another,
  20. and simultaneously bomb the cussedness
  21. out of fundamentalist of the third, we
  22. probably need to take a few moments to
  23. remind outselves of one, certain
  24. truth:
  25.  
  26.     No one has all the answers. As I
  27. see it, there may (or -- for agnostics
  28. and other questioners -- may not) be
  29. some meta-reality beyond the physical
  30. universe of our five senses. Since the
  31. only mind any of us has was built to
  32. deal with the physical world, and any
  33. language we might speak proceeds from
  34. that mind, we have no adequate words
  35. to discuss this meta-reality.
  36.  
  37.     So what we have are bits and
  38. pieces -- borrowed, stolen, used
  39. without permission -- from 6,000 years
  40. of human experience. These are brought
  41. together in three primary ways -- and
  42. hundreds of variations -- to be the
  43. stuff of faith.
  44.  
  45.     And yet, the "something" that is
  46. at the foundation of faith is not the
  47. particular words.
  48.  
  49.     So why in the world must we fight
  50. over the particular words? Why is this
  51. meta-reality used so abusively. Can
  52. one group be right if it forces all
  53. the others to use the same language?
  54.  
  55.     As you settle down for a long
  56. winter's nap, ponder this --
  57.  
  58.     Being Right has nothing to do with
  59. righteousness. The "final quiz" is not
  60. about correct doctrine, but about how
  61. we each spent our lives. And we all
  62. know the right way to spend our lives
  63. because we have all been on the
  64. receiving end of the way others spend
  65. their lives.
